Meningitis FAQs: Your Questions Answered by Eltham Pharmacy

24 / Apr

At Eltham Pharmacy in London, we understand how important it is for our patients and community to be aware of serious health conditions—especially when it comes to something as fast-moving and dangerous as meningitis. Whether you’re travelling abroad or simply want to be prepared at home, understanding meningitis and knowing what to look out for could save a life.

Our dedicated travel clinic regularly advises patients on meningitis vaccinations and prevention, particularly when visiting areas with higher risk. But just as important as prevention is early identification. That’s why we’ve compiled answers to your most common questions—especially about the widely known glass check for meningitis.

What is Meningitis?

Meningitis is an inflammation of the protective membranes (meninges) surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It’s most commonly caused by bacterial or viral infections. Bacterial meningitis is particularly serious and can be life-threatening without prompt treatment.

The condition can affect anyone, but it’s especially dangerous for babies, young children, teenagers, and young adults. Symptoms can develop rapidly, and early detection is vital to prevent complications such as brain damage, hearing loss, or even death.

How can the glass check for meningitis protect my health?

How Do I Identify Meningitis?

One of the most well-known ways to check for meningitis symptoms—especially in children—is the glass check for meningitis, sometimes called the “glass test.”

This method is used to assess whether a rash could be a sign of meningococcal septicaemia, a life-threatening form of meningitis caused by meningococcal bacteria. Here’s how it works:

1. Press a clear glass firmly against the rash.

2. Observe what happens to the rash under pressure.

If the rash does not fade when the glass is pressed against it, this is known as a non-blanching rash, and it can be a red flag for meningococcal meningitis or septicaemia. Immediate medical attention is needed in this case.

If the rash fades under pressure, it’s more likely to be a blanching rash, which is generally less concerning. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in the clear.

Does the Test Work on All Rashes?

Not all rashes are created equal. The glass check for meningitis is specifically useful in identifying a purpuric rash—a rash caused by bleeding under the skin, which is common in meningococcal infections.

This test does not reliably work for all types of rashes. Viral rashes, allergic reactions, or other dermatological conditions may not behave the same way under the glass. Furthermore, in the early stages of meningococcal infection, a rash might not yet be present at all.

Should I Rely on the Glass Test Alone?

The short answer is: no. The glass test is a helpful indicator, but it’s only one part of the puzzle. Meningitis presents with a variety of symptoms, and a rash is just one of them. Other key signs to look out for include:

  • A high fever with cold hands and feet

  • Vomiting

  • Drowsiness or difficulty waking

  • Severe headache

  • Stiff neck

  • Sensitivity to light (photophobia)

  • Confusion or irritability

  • Seizures

  • Rapid breathing

  • Limb pain

  • Pale, mottled, or bluish skin

Babies may also show signs like a bulging soft spot on the head, floppy movements, or refusal to feed.

If you notice any combination of these symptoms, especially with a non-blanching rash, seek urgent medical care—even if the glass test appears negative or uncertain.

What Should I Do If the Rash Disappears?

If a rash disappears after appearing briefly, do not assume the risk has passed. Meningitis symptoms can fluctuate, and the absence of a rash does not rule out serious illness.

In some cases, other symptoms may appear or worsen even if the rash fades. Trust your instincts—if you feel something is wrong, it’s always safer to seek medical advice.

When preparing for travel, especially to countries where meningitis is more prevalent—such as parts of sub-Saharan Africa during the dry season—we strongly recommend visiting our travel clinic. We offer meningitis vaccinations, including the ACWY vaccine, which is often required for pilgrimages like Hajj and Umrah.

Our travel health experts will assess your destination, age, and health status to recommend the best protection. We’re also happy to talk through the signs of meningitis so you know what to watch for—at home or abroad.

Prevention, Awareness, and Swift Action

The glass check for meningitis is a useful tool for identifying one of the hallmark signs of meningococcal septicaemia, but it must be used with other observations and clinical judgement. If you or someone you know is showing signs of meningitis, call 999 or go to A&E immediately.

Prevention, awareness, and swift action are key—and Eltham Pharmacy is here to help you with all three.

If you have any concerns, or if you’re travelling soon and want to protect yourself or your family, book an appointment with our travel clinic today.
